When protected spaces turn hostile…

A-Z endangered Animal Chart. Image Credit: my friend Divaahar

I was bred in a sleepy pensioner’s paradise that turned into a hi-fi city bursting at its seams in less than a decade and a half. But  like so many others,I’ve always loved the concept of retreating into a jungle resort for some peace and quiet. Don’t fancy zoos where such magnificent animals are kept in dingy little spaces. Would much rather they roam, wild and free. Whether it is children abused in orphanages, women abused in their own homes or tigers and other species killed in thier “havens”, when protected spaces turn hostile, it’s hard to remain hopeful. I wonder how many of us who enjoy wildlife resorts realize how close we are to the point of no-return. Here are the list of animals that are on the brink… (there are sooooooo many more I’ve left out)

  • A – The Asiatic Lion (Panthera leo persica) – The mascot for so many teams
  • B – The Blue Whale – (Balaenoptera musculus) -The LARRRRGESST species that has EVER lived on earth
  • C – The Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus)– A name synomymous with speed
  • D – The Irrawady Dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris)- The cutest creatures in the sea
  • E – The Elephant (Elephas maximus) – Yes, Veerappan, as we knew him is no more, but there are new avataars
  • F – The Fox (Lycalopex fulvipes) – wish this fox was cunning enough to sidestep this situation
  • G – The Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) – are we going to be happy with having only teddy bears?
  • H – The Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) – deceptively gentle looking but a ferocious defender – strangely in the same situation as many others
  • I – The Ibex (Capra ibex) – i’ve just seen them in pictures and remember including this in my school project. Perhaps that’s what future generations will be restricted to.
  • J – The Jackal (Canis aureus) – “The day of the jackal” seems to have many meanings after all.
  • K – The Kiwi (Apteryx australis) – A bird that cannot fly. That is probably its greatest sin!
  • L – The Lion Tailed Macaque (Macaca silenus) – Creation was in an adventurous mood when this particular species was made. Time is ticking away…
  • M -The Musk Deer (Moschus moschiferus) – has inspired so many perfumes/deodarants. Strangely, this whole affair stinks of apathy!
  • N -The Niligiri Leaf Monkey/ The Nilgiri Langur (Presbytis Johnii) – Indigenous to India!
  • O – The Olive Ridley Turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) – mass nesting especially at Orissa. What’s more important – having a port at the site or preserving a species that has been around longer than you and I have?
  • P – The Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) – Defines cute and many of them are increasingly starving to death because of melting ice caps
  • Q – The Manipur Bush Quail (Perdicula manipurensis) – Not found anywhere else in the world! and we’re so callous about it.
  • R -The Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) – looks tough as nails but is so dependent on the ecosystem and our influence
  • S -The Snow Leopard (Uncia uncia) – Beauty and the beast all rolled into one.
  • T -The Tiger -(Panthera tigris bengalensis) – our national animal! Seems to suffer the same fate as our national game – hockey. As the saying goes, when all is said and done, there’s more said than done.
  • U –
  • V- The slender-billed Vulture (Gyps tenuirostris) – Considered Ugly by some, but do we have the right to exterminate a whole species?
  • W -The Wolf (Canis lupus) – don’t you want your children to know where their beloved dog came from?
  • X –
  • Y -The Yak (Bos grunniens) – An animal that adapted so well in the past.
  • Z – The Zebra (Equus zebra) – inspired much fashion. Alas! if we don’t reverse this tide, we’ll just have to be satisfied with zebra prints!

The only two I’ve left blank are for you to make the connection. All I’ll say at the moment is ‘when protected spaces turn hostile… it’s time to re-invent more than just the alphabet!”

I must say you have done your research which shows that you do care about what is happening to our beautiful world. As for the two alphabets that you have left out, all I can say is they are the most important things that have become extinct. U for UNDERSTANDING the others(be it animals, birds, marine life or humans) and X for the LOVE of the earth that has vanished.

“When protected spaces turn hostile | Inspiraction!” Custom Roman Shades ended up being honestly engaging and insightful!

In the present day universe honestly, that is difficult to deliver.
    Many thanks, Andrew
